The national debt of the United States has increased dramatically over the past 20 years. If additional revenue or cuts in entitlement programs are not implemented, retirees will received significantly less benefits from Medicare and Social Security compared to what is received by current retirees.

Many Americans are unwilling or unable to save for retirement with their current income, and Social Security and Medicare allow for a social safety net for these people. As so many Democrats call for additional spending on programs that are not fiscally reasonable, such as free college tuition for all, social security and Medicare would receive even larger cuts. The solution offered by Democrats is to keep raising taxes on the wealthy, however there is no level at which the expanded offerings would be possible without also raising taxes on the middle class.
