I believe that attempts to prohibit free trade by imposing tariffs are not as beneficial to our country as is negotiating free trade agreements where compromises and peripheral issues can be raised. As an example, if a trading partner excessively pollutes, giving their industries and unfair advantage over ours, it can be addressed as part of an overall trade agreement, but a tit-for-tat trade war just raises prices for everyone. We on the left side of the political spectrum would achieve better results from "inside the tent" where we can insist on the human and ecological impacts of trade during negotiations.
