I grew up in the early 80's. At that time, I was happy to see the Republican Party break the Democratic lock on Congress and the Whitehouse. We needed new ideas to promote out economy, yet my liberal friends cautioned that we still needed the Democrats to counter-balance them... As decades have gone by, I have watched the extremely rich co-opt  the grand old party, hide behind conservative religion, and embrace extreme gerrymandering, to the point where they have now have too much control. Neither party will admit that it needs the existence of the other, though I suspect more liberal types are going to more open to the idea than those on the right. None the less, we as a people DO need both parties to be strong, vibrate, and full of competing ideas. No one doctrine or dogma will ever hold all the answers.
