I disagree strongly with the liberal embrace of "physician assisted suicide." I am aware that grievously ill people who wish to die may do so simply by refusing food and water. As far as I can tell, people are choosing to kill themselves because they want to be in charge. While I understand this impulse, I am wary of a blanket endorsement of this policy. I am very concerned that the elderly and disabled will be "encouraged" to end their lives so as not to be a "burden" to their family or society. We already seem to accept that if a pregnancy reveals that the baby has Downs Syndrome an abortion is the correct response. This ignores all the advances that have been made with Downs which allow those with the syndrome to be educated and lead satisfying lives. I am afraid that similar misinformation about the end of life will lead people to end their own or others'.
